Carp Edema Virus (CEV)

Carp Edema Virus (CEV) is the causative agent of the so-called Sleepy Disease (Koi Sleepy Disease). The disease primarily affects koi and common carp and can—particularly under unfavorable environmental conditions—lead to severe disease progression and high mortality rates.

All Information at a Glance
Testing for Carp Edema Virus provides important clarity in cases of nonspecific clinical signs in carp populations. Targeted diagnostics enable rapid action, protect other animals, and form the basis for responsible stock management.

As the name Sleepy Disease suggests, infected fish initially exhibit lethargic and sleepy behavior. Typical symptoms include sunken eyes, skin lesions, and in advanced stages, gill necrosis can be observed. Mortality rates can reach up to 90%.

Early Detection Despite Nonspecific Symptoms
CEV causes symptoms such as apathy, loss of appetite, and respiratory problems that can easily be confused with stress, parasitic infestation, or bacterial infections.

Prevention of Severe Outbreaks in the Stock
The virus spreads rapidly within the stock. Early testing, particularly of new arrivals, helps prevent widespread disease outbreaks and mortality.

Even clinically asymptomatic fish can carry the virus. Testing reduces the risk of introducing CEV undetected.

Differentiation
Only targeted laboratory diagnostics (PCR) enable clear differentiation.

Common Clinical Symptoms
  • Lethargy: reduced activity level, often motionless, fish “sleeping” at the bottom

  • Respiratory distress due to gill damage: mucus-covered, pale gills, necrosis

  • Impaired swimming behavior: sluggish swimming with balance disorders

  • Edema: fluid accumulation in the gill area and internal organs

Two ways to DNA analysis – choose what suits you best

Order – Digital
  • Recommended for fast online processing

The fast and cost-effective way: Order your DNA analysis online and receive the results conveniently as a digital certificate in your own archive. Transparent, efficient, and accessible at any time, wherever you are.

Order – Paper form
  • Recommended for classic documentation

The classic way to DNA analysis: Submit your samples with an order form and receive the results as an official certificate in paper form. Ideal for those who value printed documentation.
